Micro franchise as solution for undernourishment

Roughly a third of the Kenyans is undernourished. Dairy products with all their essential nutrients can prove to be the solution. Dairy farmers in Kenya produce five billion kg of milk a year. About a billion of it is wasted because of shortcomings in the dairy farming chain, such as the lack of cooling systems or of sales. Agriterra and FrieslandCampina want to stop the wasting of milk and want to provide the whole population with the nutrients of milk. With a plan for micro franchising, they compete in the Partnership contest: a competition for business plans in development countries.

Agriterra and FrieslandCampina's plan include a microfranchise formula for local distributors (the franchisees). They sell reliable quality milk and other dairy products from a distribution place (for example a cooled car or little shop) to consumers and provide stable sales. They buy the dairy products for a fixed price from the dairy cooperatives. Dairy farmers deliver their milk to these cooperatives and receive a fair charge for this. Local entrepreneurship, guaranteed sales and a sound milk price for the farmers make up the fundaments for broad availability of affordable dairy products.

Micro franchising is an optimal method of social entrepreneurship since it brings products and services of major social importance on the market in a small-scaled but effective way. Making milk with all its essential nutrients available helps in fighting undernourishment and in building a healthy population. An eating pattern that includes qualitative and reliable, nutritious products is essential to a durably development of the country.
